Heavy Equipment & Small Tools Mechanic

The Heavy Equipment & Small Tools Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of construction equipment — from large diesel-powered machinery to small handheld tools. This role ensures all equipment is safe, reliable, and ready to support field operations with minimal downtime. The mechanic will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues, and support equipment logistics across job sites.

Heavy Equipment Maintenance & Repair
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy construction equipment including excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, telehandlers, and dump trucks
  • Perform engine, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and drivetrain repairs
  • Conduct preventive maintenance such as fluid changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and system checks
  • Troubleshoot using diagnostic software, scan tools, and manufacturer service manuals
  • Rebuild or replace major components (engines, transmissions, pumps, cylinders)
Small Tools & Light Equipment
  • Maintain and repair small tools such as saws, drills, compactors, generators, pumps, and pneumatic tools
  • Inspect tools for wear, damage, and safety compliance
  • Perform carburetor cleaning, electrical troubleshooting, and component replacement
  • Track and document tool inventory, repairs, and service intervals
Operational Support
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns on job sites and perform field repairs when necessary
  • Coordinate with supervisors, operators, and the equipment manager to prioritize repairs
  • Maintain accurate service logs, work orders, and parts usage records
  • Assist with equipment mobilization, inspections, and readiness for new projects
  • Ensure all work meets safety, environmental, and regulatory standards
Shop & Safety Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Follow all OSHA, company, and equipment manufacturer safety guidelines
  • Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend long-term solutions
  • Support continuous improvement of maintenance processes and equipment reliability
Must-Have Qualifications:
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience repairing heavy equipment, diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
  • Experience maintaining small tools and light construction equipment
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, schematics, and service manuals
  • Valid driver’s license: ability to obtain DOT medical card if required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical certification in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, or related field
  • Welding, cutting, and fabrication skills
  • Experience with telematics systems and computerized diagnostics
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Ability to work overtime or respond to emergency repairs with short notice
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in various weather conditions
  • Ability to operate and maneuver heavy equipment for testing and diagnostics
  • Comfortable working in industrial, construction, and outdoor environments
